{"id":109,"date":"2007-07-24T17:09:32","date_gmt":"2007-07-24T17:09:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.the-finance-zone.co.uk\/business\/royal-mail-denies-pension-cuts\/"},"modified":"2007-07-24T17:09:32","modified_gmt":"2007-07-24T17:09:32","slug":"royal-mail-denies-pension-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-finance-zone.co.uk\/index.php\/2007\/07\/24\/royal-mail-denies-pension-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal Mail denies pension cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>R<span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">oyal Mail has denied a report that it plans to cut the pensions of around 167,000 of its postal workers.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Royal Mail staff would have to work for five more years before collecting their retirement pay, according to a company document published in the Daily Mirror. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">But Royal Mail said the document was &#8220;out of date&#8221; and no decision on pension provision had yet been taken. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">The report comes on the eve of a two-week campaign of staggered strike action across the UK postal service. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&#8220;Royal Mail said very clearly earlier this year that it would be consulting on the future of the pension scheme for both new recruits and existing members,&#8221; a company spokesman said. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&#8220;But no decisions have yet been taken as we have not even begun the formal consultation.&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">The plans published in the Mirror to plug the company&#8217;s \u00c2\u00a36bn pension deficit included closing its final-salary scheme to new joiners from next year &#8211; a move that would echo the actions of many large UK employers. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Existing workers would also be affected, with the age at which staff can retire increase from 60 to 62 next year and to 65 from 2010.
