{"id":229,"date":"2008-07-24T13:28:49","date_gmt":"2008-07-24T13:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.the-finance-zone.co.uk\/?p=229"},"modified":"2008-07-24T13:28:49","modified_gmt":"2008-07-24T13:28:49","slug":"moscow-tops-list-of-pricey-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-finance-zone.co.uk\/index.php\/2008\/07\/24\/moscow-tops-list-of-pricey-cities\/","title":{"rendered":"Moscow tops list of pricey cities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"first\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-finance-zone.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/moscow.jpg\"><\/a>Moscow has topped the league of most expensive cities for expatriates to live in for the third year running.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The research by human resources firm Mercer took account of expenses such as rent, eating out and petrol.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-finance-zone.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/moscow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-230 alignleft\" style=\"float: left;\" title=\"moscow\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-finance-zone.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/moscow.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a>Moscow has particularly expensive coffee, with a cup in a cafe costing $10.40 (\u00a35.19) including service.<\/p>\n<p>Tokyo climbed two spots into second place in the survey, followed by London, which dropped one place into third, and Oslo, which came fourth. <!-- E SF --><\/p>\n<p><!-- S IANC --><a name=\"text\"><\/a><!-- E IANC --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Moscow&#8217;s position as the most expensive place for expatriate living has been strengthened by the appreciation of the rouble against the US dollar and the continuous rising accommodation costs,&#8221; said Yvonne Traber, a research manager at Mercer.<\/p>\n<p><!-- S ILIN --><\/p>\n<div class=\"arrdo\">The survey compared the cost of 200 items in 143 cities. The three cheapest cities were Karachi in Pakistan, Quito in Ecuador and Asuncion in Paraguay.<\/div>\n<p>Asuncion was the cheapest city for the sixth year running.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Currency impact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mercer said that the weakening value of the US dollar had caused significant changes in the rankings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although the traditionally expensive cities of Western Europe and Asia still feature in the top 20, cities in Eastern Europe, Brazil and India are creeping up the list,&#8221; Ms Traber said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Conversely, some locations such as Stockholm and New York now appear less costly by comparison.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, as well as London slipping one place, Birmingham dropped from 41st to 66th, while Glasgow fell from 36th to 69th.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In contrast to the strengthening euro and other European currencies, the British pound has remained relatively stable against the US dollar,&#8221; said Ms Traber.<\/p>\n<p><!-- S IANC --><a name=\"cities\"><\/a><!-- E IANC --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the cost of living in the eurozone has risen relative to the US, UK cities have declined in the rankings.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Moscow has topped the league of most expensive cities for expatriates to live in for the third year running.
