Shares in <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=XOM&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=XOM&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">ExxonMobil<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span> were 1 per cent lower at $74.57 while <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=BHI&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=BHI&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">Baker Hughes<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, the oil services group, was 2.5 per cent softer at $63.45.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder ad-mpusky\" id=\"ad-placeholder-mpusky\">The S&#038;P 500 was 0.1 per cent higher at 1,457.64, in relatively sluggish trading, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was little changed, up 5 points to 12,772.54.<\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=WMT&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=WMT&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">Wal-Mart<\/font><\/a><\/strong> saw its shares gain 3 per cent to $49.94 on the back of better-than-expected quarterly results and upbeat guidance from the retailer.<\/p>\n<p>But shareholders in<span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=HD&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=HD&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\"> Home Depot <\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span>fared less well, after the home improvement chain said its quarterly profit fell 28 per cent because of the weak US housing market. Shares in Home Depot stood 0.2 per cent weaker at $41.34.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan Stanley cut its recommendation on <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=JBLU&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=JBLU&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">JetBlue\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span> stock after a bad week in which the airline\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s operations were crippled by a snowstorm, leaving some passengers stranded.<\/p>\n<p>David Neeleman, chief executive, said the cost of the disruptions might be more than $30m, sending shares in JetBlue down 4.8 per cent to $12.90.<\/p>\n<p>Investors reacted positively to news of a possible merger between <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=XMSR&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=XMSR&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">XM<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span> and <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=SIRI&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=SIRI&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">Sirius<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, the US satellite operators, in spite of uncertainty over regulatory hurdles.<\/p>\n<p>The deal is described as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a merger of equals\u00e2\u20ac\u009d which gives shareholders in Sirius and XM an equal stake of the combined group that would include radio shows by Oprah Winfrey and Howard Stern, the shock-jock. Regulators would need to assess whether combining the only two groups permitted to offer satellite radio in the US would be in the public interest. For the deal to be sanctioned, the Federal Communications Commission would have to overturn its own rule prohibiting such a merger.<\/p>\n<p>Shares in Sirius and XM were up 6.4 per cent and 12.6 per cent respectively to $3.94 and $15.74. This helped to lift the tech-led Nasdaq Composite 0.4 per cent to stand at 2,506.38.<\/p>\n<p>In other deal news, <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=VMC&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=VMC&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">Vulcan Materials<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, which makes roadbuilding materials, said it had agreement for a $4.6bn cash and stock offer to buy <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=FRK&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=FRK&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">Florida Rock Industries<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span>. Shares in Florida Rock were up 41.8 per cent to $66.60 while shares in Vulcan were 0.6 per cent down at $111.16.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Shire, the UK drugs group, said it had agreed to buy <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=NRPH&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=NRPH&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">New River Pharmaceuticals<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, its US partner, for $2.6bn in cash.<\/p>\n<p>The moves gives the UK company full control of Vyvanse, the two groups\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 new drug for attention deficit disorder.
