{"id":55,"date":"2007-02-26T19:23:50","date_gmt":"2007-02-26T19:23:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.the-finance-zone.co.uk\/?p=55"},"modified":"2007-02-26T19:23:50","modified_gmt":"2007-02-26T19:23:50","slug":"proposed-private-equity-buy-out-lifts-txu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-finance-zone.co.uk\/index.php\/2007\/02\/26\/proposed-private-equity-buy-out-lifts-txu\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposed private equity buy-out lifts TXU"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ft-story-body\">Wall Street stocks were little changed on Monday morning after the announcement of the biggest proposed private equity buy-out in history failed to lift investors\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 spirits.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Recent gains in oil prices on worries about Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nuclear ambitions continued to weigh down the market, offsetting takeover speculation surrounding chemical groups and carmakers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder ad-mpusky\" id=\"ad-placeholder-mpusky\">Shares in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=TXU&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=TXU&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">TXU<\/font><\/a><\/strong> surged after Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Texas Pacific Group agreed to jointly buy the Texas utility for about $45bn \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a new record for a leveraged buy-out.<\/div>\n<p>The two groups are paying roughly $32bn in cash, valuing TXU at $69.25 a share \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a 25 per cent premium to the average closing share price over the last 20 days. The buyers will also take on $12bn of existing debt.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed buy-out helped the S&#038;P 500 index edge into positive territory for the first time in four days but the gains were trimmed by midday to leave the index flat at 1,452.10. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was also virtually unchanged at 12,647.40. The technology-led Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.3 per cent to 2,508.19.<\/p>\n<p>In other deal news, rumours of private equity interest in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=DOW&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=DOW&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">Dow Chemical <\/font><\/a><\/strong>sent shares in the group 5.2 per cent higher to $45.72.<\/p>\n<p>Traders have been speculating over the possibility of a buy-out for some time but no private equity group has confirmed that it is working on a bid. The deal talk boosted other companies in the sector, with shares in <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=LYO&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=LYO&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">Lyondell Chemical<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span> up 4.3 per cent to $33.30.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Apax Partners and Morgan Stanley Principal Investments agreed to buy <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=HBG&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=ca&#038;s2=ca&#038;symb=HBG&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">Hub International<\/font><\/a><\/strong>, the Chicago-based insurance brokerage, for $1.7bn. Its shares jumped 14.3 per cent to $39.42.<\/p>\n<p>German carmaker DaimlerChrysler was reported to be considering taking a minority stake in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=GM&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=GM&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">General Motors<\/font><\/a><\/strong> as payment for a purchase of Chrysler by GM. If a deal were reached, it is expected both companies would benefit from savings, while GM would avoid having to raise capital to fund a purchase. Shares in <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=GM&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=GM&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">GM<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span> pared early gains to stand 0.5 per cent lower at $34.10.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=MRK&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=MRK&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">Merck<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span> was raised from \u00e2\u20ac\u0153hold\u00e2\u20ac\u009d to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153buy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and had its price target increased from $45 to $50 by Citigroup, which was impressed by the outlook for the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s diabetes treatment Januvia. Its shares climbed 4.1 per cent to $44.70.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=C&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=C&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">Citigroup<\/font><\/a><\/strong> announced the appointment of a new chief financial officer Gary Crittenden, formerly CFO of American Express. Its shares eased 0.6 per cent to $53.47 while shares in <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=AXP&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=AXP&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">American Express<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span> fell 1.3 per cent to $57.29 amid wider pressures on financial sector stocks.<\/p>\n<p>The US Food and Drug Administration approved <span class=\"bodystrong\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mwprices.ft.com\/custom\/ft2-com\/html-quotechartnews.asp?FTSite=FTCOM&#038;q=LLY&#038;searchtype&#038;expanded=&#038;countrycode=us&#038;s2=us&#038;symb=LLY&#038;company=NEW\"><font color=\"#003399\">Eli Lilly<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s antidepressant Cymbalta for the treatment of generalised anxiety disorder.
